Weekend Wrap-up
Theme of the Week: Transformation Is an Inside Job
Saturday, May 24, 2008

Why is Psalm 119 the Bible's longest chapter? Because it was designed to be the ultimate memory-assisting meditation tool for people of the Book. Each 8-verse unit, displaying a different facet of God's revealed Word, corresponds to one of the Hebrew alphabet's 22 letters. This unit is for the second letter, beth. So in Hebrew, the first word of each verse in it begins with a B sound.

Interact with God's Word

Psalm 119:9-16

  1. What is the key to remaining pure in a filthy environment?
  2. Oral repetition was a common practice for assimilating and passing along God's Word in an era when people didn't have personal copies of the Scriptures. But why (vv. 11, 13) does memorization remain important for us?
  3. While most of us chafe under rules, the psalmist prized them as much as riches (vv. 14-16). Why do you think he reacted this way?
  4. How does obedience to divine guidelines protect us?
Spend Time in Prayer

Ask God to apply the psalmist's requests (vv. 10, 12) to you personally: "Don't let me wander from your commands" and "Teach me your principles."

Psalm 119:9-16

9 How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word. 10 I have tried hard to find you— don't let me wander from your commands. 11 I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. 12 I praise you, O Lord; teach me your decrees. 13 I have recited aloud all the regulations you have given us. 14 I have rejoiced in your laws as much as in riches. 15 I will study your commandments and reflect on your ways. 16 I will delight in your decrees and not forget your word.

0Prayer for the Week

Lord, if I am ever to resist the seductive spirit of our age, I need to absorb Your Word into the core of my life.
