Who Said It … John Fischer

John Fischer got his start as a singer/songwriter when he recorded "The Cold Cathedral" album of Christian folksongs in the late '60s. Since then he's produced another 11 albums. For 23 years he wrote a monthly column in Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) magazine.

Today, John is Senior Writer for PurposeDrivenLife.com. His latest book is Confessions of a Caffeinated Christian (available at fischtank.com). He's also a frequent speaker at conferences, colleges, and churches.

What He Said … Going Through the Motions

You're wasting your money and my time," my older brother's trumpet teacher told my parents after a frustrating year of lessons with me.

My brother played first chair in his high school band and won numerous church competitions. I remember his golden-toned solos in church, and the trumpet trios in which he performed intricate renditions of well-known hymns. I wanted to be like my big brother until I found out what it would cost me in time and effort.

The sound of any brass instrument is actually made by the buzzing of the lips inside a mouthpiece. It requires tremendous muscle control in and around the lips, and since these aren't muscles you use for anything else, the only way to build them up is to practice, and stay in practice. I simply didn't have the drive to do it, and the trumpet teacher knew that.

But my failure at the trumpet contrasts with the development of my guitar playing several years later. [continued 10/19]

Don't allow me to settle for just going through the motions, Lord. Help me discover how to come fully alive.
