Weekend Wrap-Up Theme of the Week: The Gospel Illustrated Saturday, December 19, 2009

Hebrews 11 could be called The Faith Hall of Fame, listing Old Testament role models who lived for something they could not see—a heavenly hope through a coming resurrection (v. 35). We read about great heroes who followed God against terrible odds and amid horrible hardships. But something is easily missed: These role models were far from perfect. Some were terribly flawed. Still, God used them—giving hope that we, too, can be examples of faith in spite of our shortcomings. Interact with God's Word
Hebrews 11
- How did these Old Testament believers earn "a good reputation" (vv. 2 & 39)?
- How do we keep future-focused like these past saints (v. 10) while modeling faith in the present?
- Why did flawed Samson (Judges 13-16) make the list (v. 32)?
- Why does God choose to use followers with flaws? (See 2 Cor 12:5-10.)
- What can we learn from great heroes like Joseph (v. 22) who didn't give into temptation (Gen 39:1-12)?
- Read Philippians 3:10-16. How does this passage offer both challenge and encouragement for modeling faith in Christ?
Spend Time in Prayer
Ask God to help you earn a "good reputation" as a faithful believer, confess your shortcomings in modeling Christ, and thank him for the positive ways he's already used you to impact the lives of others.
Hebrews 11
Great Examples of Faith
1 Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. 2 Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation.
3 By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God's command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen.
4 It was by faith that Abel brought a more acceptable offering to God than Cain did. Abel's offering gave evidence that he was a righteous man, and God showed his approval of his gifts. Although Abel is long dead, he still speaks to us by his example of faith.
5 It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying—"he disappeared, because God took him." For before he was taken up, he was known as a person who pleased God. 6 And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.
7 It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had never happened before. By his faith Noah condemned the rest of the world, and he received the righteousness that comes by faith.

Father, thank you for godly role models who strive to imitate Jesus in all they do. Help me to follow their example so that I might model Christ-likeness to all who look to me for guidance and leadership.
