Weekend Bible Study Theme of the week: Out of Work or Changing Careers Saturday, September 11, 2010
 1 of 2

Whatever struggle we're facing—from job loss to the death of someone we love—we often find hope and comfort by turning to the Psalms. When the palmist cries out to God, we find echoes of our own anguished cries. When the psalmist expresses rage, we, too, can relate to such uncontrollable anger. The Psalms touch us deeply—and express the deep yearnings of our souls. Psalm 27 is no different. As you study this psalm of David, reflect on whatever difficulties you're going through, and then let its timeless truths sink deep into your heart and pain. Interact with God's Word:
Psalm 27
- In verses 1-4, what reasons does David give for his confidence in God's ability to protect and deliver him?
- How might we apply verses 4-6 to our own lives? (See Heb. 10:25; Acts 2:42-47.)
- What does David "ask of the Lord" in verse 4? Does David's request surprise you? What do you usually ask for in times of difficulty?
- What do verses 7-10 tell us about David's intimate relationship with God?
- According to verses 11-14, what prepares a man to face his enemies? How can the
truths/principles found in these verses prepare us to face difficult circumstances?
Spend Time in Prayer:
Spend time reflecting on today's Bible study and this week's readings. As you reflect, jot down three to five prayer needs that come to mind. Pray a one or two-sentence prayer for each need.
Psalm 27 A psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—
so why should I be afraid?
The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger,
so why should I tremble?
2 When evil people come to devour me,
when my enemies and foes attack me,
they will stumble and fall.
3 Though a mighty army surrounds me,
my heart will not be afraid.
Even if I am attacked,
I will remain confident.
4 The one thing I ask of the Lord—
the thing I seek most—
is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
delighting in the Lord's perfections
and meditating in his Temple.
5 For he will conceal me there when troubles come;
he will hide me in his sanctuary.
He will place me out of reach on a high rock.
6 Then I will hold my head high
above my enemies who surround me.
At his sanctuary I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy,
singing and praising the Lord with music.
7 Hear me as I pray, O Lord.
Be merciful and answer me!
8 My heart has heard you say, "Come and talk with me."
And my heart responds, "Lord, I am coming."
9 Do not turn your back on me.
Do not reject your servant in anger.
You have always been my helper.
Don't leave me now; don't abandon me,
O God of my salvation!
10 Even if my father and mother abandon me,
the Lord will hold me close.
