Acting on Freedom
Theme of the Week: Sin: What We Can't and Can Do About It

Key Bible Verse: And because you belong to [Christ], the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. (Romans 8:2)

Dig Deeper: Romans 8:1-13

During World War II, Jonathan Wainwright was the only United States Army general to be captured. Eventually, an Allied airplane landed near the camp where Wainwright was imprisoned. An American officer walked to the fence, saluted, and said, "General, Japan has surrendered."

Wainwright stood tall, limped to the commandant's office, walked right up to his enemy's desk, and announced in a calm voice, "My commander-in-chief has defeated your commander-in-chief. I am in control now. I order you to surrender!"

The Japanese commandant quietly surrendered. Without firing a shot, Wainwright took over, despite his emaciated, handicapped physical condition. How? It's simple. The truth had set him free. Without a struggle and out of extreme weakness, he simply believed the truth and acted on it.

When he, by faith, acted according to the truth he had heard, the enemy surrendered without hesitation. Wainwright was weak. We know that his victory didn't stem from his own strength. It came from the one who had gained it for him. He simply appropriated what was his.

Like Wainwright, you may feel weak and debilitated at times, but victory is yours because of the cross.

My Response: What do today's reading and Key Bible Verse say to me about experiencing freedom from sin's captivity?

Thought to Apply: God's grace is his unmerited favor toward the wicked, unworthy sinners, by which he delivers them from condemnation and death.—John MacArthur (pastor, writer)

Prayer for the Week
Heavenly Father, may I remember that I can't rid myself of sin by my own effort and that Christ died and rose again to free me from the power of sin and death.
