Key Bible Verses: So don't lose a minute in building on what you've been given, complementing your basic faith with good character, spiritual understanding, alert discipline, passionate patience, reverent wonder, warm friendliness, and generous love. (2 Peter 1:5-7, The Message)

Dig Deeper: 2 Peter 1:1-11

My longtime friend Bobby Richardson was a second baseman for the New York Yankees from 1955 to 1966. He's an outspoken Christian who is a leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Though Bobby is happy to share his faith with anyone who asks, he is always gracious, never pushy or judgmental.

Around the Yankees clubhouse, Bobby stood out as one of those rare players who never lost his temper and never used profane language. Even though he didn't rebuke anyone else for foul language, he noticed that the other players seemed to rein in their behavior when he was around. He'd approach a group of players who were telling lewd stories or bragging about their sexual exploits, then one of them would see Bobby and nudge the others. They'd all stop talking.

"I never said they should stop talking that way," Bobby told me. "I didn't preach at them. They just all seemed to change the subject whenever I came by."

Bobby Richardson is a man of influence because he is a man of self-discipline and self-control. The impact of his influence flows directly from his character.

My Response: If I asked my family and a few friends to evaluate my ability to be self-controlled and self-disciplined, what would they say?

Thought to Apply: Live so that you wouldn't be afraid to sell the family parrot to the town gossip.—Will Rogers (humorist, social commentator, cowboy)

Prayer for the Week
Heavenly Father, help me to admit my mistakes, guard my integrity, and always strive to be the same man in secret as I am before the watching world.
