Weekend Bible Study
Theme of the Week: Doctrine: Why It Matters
Saturday, May 17, 2014

A solid understanding of the fundamental doctrines of the faith is essential to every believer's spiritual growth. Without such an understanding, you're liable to be "tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching" (v. 14). A mature Christian knows the truth when he sees it, and is able to sniff out the subtle, popular lies that sneak into a church's thinking over time. But ultimately, doctrine isn't about being right, it's about fully knowing and imitating the God of the universe.

  1. According to verse 12, what is the role of the various teachers in the church?
  2. What's the ultimate goal for learning church doctrine? (See vv. 13-15.)
  3. Why is it important to remember to "speak the truth in love" (v. 15)?
  4. Does your church offer a basic church doctrine class? If so, consider signing up.

Key Study Passage:

Ephesians 4:11-15

Spend Time in Prayer: Thank God that he can be known through his Word and for the insights of Christians who have gone before us; ask him to give you a greater hunger and thirst for biblical truth.

Ephesians 4:11-15

11 Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God's people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God's Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won't be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. 15 Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.

Prayer for the Week
Author of Truth, open my eyes to the truths that come to life in your Word and in your true gospel; may I never stop seeking to learn, understand, and apply them better.

Thanks to you---Men of Integrity---for bringing all of us back to God's voice---his word, the Bible. This reminder has given me a new, appreciation for what my church is working toward. i thank you, Resonate church , for being bold and outspoken with the teachings of Jesus. Our action-oriented growing congregation is speaking volumes to our city. But it is not through our power that this is accomplished but with the power of Jesus. Praise your name i can be a tiny, cog within the machinery here to achieve this goal--- more people committed to Jesus Christ. Amen.

Thank you for this week's teaching. I love this weekend's key study passage. It reminds me to stay rooted in Christ's teachings and not let the daily distractions "blow" off course.
