Key Bible Verse: Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. (Ephesians 4:24)
Dig Deeper: Ephesians 4:17-24
Perhaps the greatest loss in the not-yet-married life is growth in godliness, because so many of us procrastinate in pursuing it, waiting until we get married to get more serious. We don't have the day-in, day-out accountability of a spouse and family yet—people close enough to see how we really live. And we foolishly think finding love will mysteriously unlock growth and maturity in our lives. It's true that marriage often brings sanctification, but the testimony of most is that marriage is more diagnosis than prescription in our pursuit of godliness. Rather than unlocking the fruit of the Spirit, it will more often (graciously) uncover flaws. In reality, none of the fruits of the Spirit are reserved for marriage. They're the produce of conversion (our union with Christ), not of marriage.
Paul says the key to experiencing the freedom purchased for us at the cross is to walk increasingly like Jesus—to skip the roundabouts and ride on the highway of the gospel—putting on our new self by the power of the Spirit (Gal. 5:16). We turn away from the desires of the flesh and trade them for better ones—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Gal. 5:22-23). The free and full life is found in Christ and played out in Christlikeness.

Prayer for the Week
Jesus, you are my first love and always will be; when I am feeling lonely or unfulfilled, remind me to find my satisfaction in you before I seek it in anyone else.
