Up Close & Personal with Jenny Masche This mother of 20-month-old sextuplets talks about life with her miracle babies. By Mary Darr and Tally Flint
 1 of 4

The Masche Miracle Babies were born by C-section after 30 weeks of gestation to Jenny and Bryan Masche. Savannah, Cole, Grant, Molli, Bailey and Blake were born in an Arizona hospital on June 11, 2007, and ranged in weight from 2 pounds, 1 ounce to 3 pounds. They're the 13th set of living sextuplets in the United States.
Jenny conceived her babies through intrauterine insemination after she and Bryan struggled with infertility and several miscarriages during their first three years of marriage. Although their physicians counseled them about "selective reduction" (aborting some of the fetuses after 10 to 12 weeks), Jenny and Bryan wrote on their Web site (maschemiracles.com), "We knew right away this is not an option for us. We understand that the risk is high, but we also understand these little ones are much more than six fetuses. Each one is a miracle given to us by God."
After Jenny's C-section, the Masche babies spent several weeks in neonatal intensive care before coming home, one at a time, to Lake Havasu City. But the drama didn't end with their births; Jenny's blood pressure elevated, and she had an increased volume of blood. She went into heart failure after their delivery and nearly died. Fortunately, after staying in intensive care for a week, Jenny, 32, slowly recovered.
In June 2008, the family of eight made a live appearance on NBC's "Today Show" and also was featured in an hour-long documentary on WE tv. And they traveled to Los Angeles to film "Deal or No Deal," won $121,000 and received an additional $100,000 donation toward the children's college funds.
MomSense Editor Mary Darr and Tally Flint, MOPS mom of 10-month old twins, a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old, and editor of The Mommy Diaries (Revell, 2008), caught up with Jenny between sleeping and going to work. They talked with her about her growth curve as a mom of sextuplets.
Some days mothering feels so overwhelming. What helps you get through your day?
I like to compare mothering to running a marathon; it's exhausting, but the end is so rewarding. As a mom of six, I have days when I hit the wall big time! I feel like I can't take one more step. But then I push past it, put one foot in front of the other and keep going.
When I hit the wall in mothering, I often take five minutes to go into my room and close the door. I like to quote a lot of Scripture; one of my favorites is Psalm 16:11, "You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence." I pray for God's presence and joy. Nehemiah 8:10 says, "the joy of the Lord is my strength." If I have his joy, I have his strength, too.
