When 21 Coptic Christian men were martyred on a Libyan beach in 2015, their unwavering faith in the face of death became a powerful testimony of courage and conviction. Now, their story has been transformed into a groundbreaking animated film that honors their sacrifice and celebrates their spiritual victory.
The 21, a 13-minute animated film which has been shortlisted for an Academy Award, will premiere online February 15, 2025—the tenth anniversary of their martyrdom. The film offers viewers worldwide the chance to witness this story of faith and endurance.
Created over five years by an international team of more than 70 artists from 24 countries, the film brings a new perspective to an event that stunned the global Church. Director Tod Polson, formerly a creative director at Cartoon Saloon, worked closely with the Coptic community and the martyrs’ families to ensure an authentic and respectful portrayal of their story. The film’s distinctive visual style draws inspiration from neo-Coptic iconography while its original score by the acclaimed Ayoub Sisters incorporates traditional Coptic hymns and liturgy.
