In affirmation of its artistic excellence and spiritual storytelling, The 21 has been named to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences shortlist for Best Animated Short Film. The film, executive produced by Christianity Today, stands among fifteen selections chosen from eighty-eight qualified entries in this category.
The 21 is a 13-minute animated film honoring the Coptic martyrs killed in Libya in 2015 that has already drawn acclaim from leading figures in animation. Glen Keane, Academy Award winner for Best Animated Short Film, calls it “powerful, heart wrenching, challenging and inspiring… not to mention exquisitely beautiful.” Three-time Academy Award nominee Tomm Moore writes that the film’s “design and craftsmanship is excellent.”
Created over five years by an international team of more than 70 artists from 24 countries, the film represents a groundbreaking collaboration between global animation talent and the Coptic community. Its distinctive visual style, which draws from neo-Coptic iconography, delivers what Ricky Nierva, production designer of Up and art director of Finding Nemo, describes as “a moving tribute to bravery. Its beautiful visuals support an intense story about sacrifice and faith.”
The public will have the opportunity to view this Academy-recognized film during its online premiere February 15, 2025—the tenth anniversary of the martyrdom. The film will stream free for 72 hours. Organizations interested in hosting screenings can license a comprehensive screening kit that includes the main film, three short documentaries, and additional resources.
