Left Behind: Stronger Than Fiction

Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins' multi-million-selling Left Behind series has boosted Christian fiction to new levels of respectability, last year knocking John Grisham from a seven-year reign at the top of the best-seller lists. But Jenkins, the writing half of the duo, treasures the fact that nearly 3,000 people have written to say they accepted Jesus as Savior after reading the end-times saga.
Veteran author Norm Rohrer is interviewing some of the correspondents to compile These Will Not Be Left Behind, planned for release next year. One letter came from an 80-year-old man whose eyesight was so poor he had to use a magnifying glass to read the books. Afterwards, he asked someone to pray with him so he wouldn't be left behind. "He said it wasn't because of what he saw through the glass but what he saw through his heart," Jenkins says. "That was a particularly moving one."
Another came from a couple in Minnesota whose teenage son had strayed from church. Convinced by the first book to mend his ways, he planned to give some to friends. But before he could, he died in an accident. His parents distributed copies at the funeral, and several of his friends later received Christ.
"It's almost like we're past aspirations and goals," Jenkins adds. "Our hope is that we just continue interest in the books until it's over so as many people as possible can come to Christ through this."
