Martial arts master Billy Blanks is the creative genius behind Tae-Bo®, the latest exercise rage that combines aerobics, ballet, karate, boxing, and weight training. His videos have sold millions of copies. He has an infomercial, a book, The Tae-Bo Way (Bantam), and two new videos for kids and seniors. And last year he created the Billy Blanks Foundation, an organization that helps women and children. But what's special about Billy is his passionate relationship with Jesus. At the Billy Blanks World Karate Center, Tae-Bo® afficionados work out surrounded by banners that read "God is good" and "Walk by faith and not by sight." Here's what Billy had to share with TCW.
You grew up with a lot working against you: poverty, dyslexia, hip problems.
Yes, but I learned to overcome that. Most people think all there is to life is the body, the mind. But if all you're controlled by is your five senses or your emotions, you're setting yourself up for failure! I discovered that when I allowed God to work in me, I could forgive the things that happened to meand move ahead.
Why is Tae-Bo® so popular?
It gives women strength they never realized they had. They learn how to defend themselves. That kind of knowledge is empoweringand you end up feeling much better about yourself. Not only have people's lives changed physically through Tae-Bo®, but also spiritually. Sure, people lose weight, but many of them are also starting to read the Bible and go back to church. That's a blessing.
