Best Books Survey

Vote for the top books of the 20th century.

Christianity Today February 1, 2000

For our annual books issue (April 24, 2000), Christianity Today plans to include a list of the 100 best books of the 20th century. We are polling a number of church leaders and our online readers to get nominations for this list.

We are open to including any genre of books, both fiction and nonfiction. Although we are thinking mostly of religious or Christian works specifically, we want to consider books which are not overtly Christian or even religious, but which deal with themes of religious, theological, or ethical significance. “Best,” for us, means that these books not only made an impact when they first were published, but they also have enduring significance for the Christian faith and church. Should Christians (and others) read these works even in the 21st century? might be a question to ask of these books.

Here’s where you come in. We’d like to have you nominate up to 10 books to include with this list (see form below). For the first five nominations, we also invite you to write a sentence or two about what the significance of each book is. In other words, why does it have ongoing importance for Christian faith? Please list the name of the author and the title of each book.

We would appreciate it if you would e-mail your nominations to CenturyBooks@aol.com BY FEBRUARY 21.
