Lead Alongside Them

Leadership is best learned in action.

Leadership Journal January 16, 2013

In our fast-paced culture, I am drawn to men and women who can settle their hearts long enough to discern God’s call. Those who immediately shout, “Yes,” to an opportunity make me wary. Often the best leaders are the quiet, steady people who just show up consistently and exhibit wisdom.

I invite them to take an inventory of their gifts. I help them see where God is already using them or priming them to be used. Finally, I invite them to join us on the leadership journey. Most people are not ready or willing to step up and lead on their own. There is a whole process of leading together that must take place first. The best way to train is to pray, discern, and jump into action together.
