Today’s Verse

We are such a production-driven society. What do you have to offer? How hard can you hustle? What do you bring to the table?

While using our gifts and talents to glorify God is an act of worship, the need to achieve often takes over. We find ourselves not only physically exhausted but mentally and spiritually exhausted as well. Maybe you have a morning you’re able to sleep in or a night where you can go to bed early, but what are you doing to find spiritual rest? Our souls crave time to pause and be still. Our souls crave time to rest in God—to sit and just be with him.

My favorite passage on this topic is found in Matthew 11:28–30 paraphrased in The Message: “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Recover my life? Yes, please. While we’re striving to check things off our to-do lists and working to perform for a world that will continuously let us down, God is looking for our presence. He cares more about being with us than what we’re achieving.

Reflect:
Read Psalm 62:1. What inner drives or motivations make it difficult for you to rest in the Lord? Why?

Pray:
Reflect on your life with the Lord, naming desires or fears that drive you to strive and achieve. Listen to the Holy Spirit as you consider which motivations are healthy and which may be damaging.
