Behind the Story

People sometimes wonder about the value of theological education, especially if they’re not going into full-time ministry. Leanne Snavely, CT’s user-experience project director, has an interesting perspective on this. She has an MA in systematic theology and recently told us she felt like she used her education every day while working on our website redesign.

From Leanne:

Even though my specific role has had a tactical focus on technology and user experiences, I continually lean on my theological and pastoral training. I keep asking myself, ‘How can we serve the church through this new website?’ ‘Can visitors find the answers to questions about their faith?’ ‘Does this showcase the stories and ideas of the kingdom of God through news and testimonies of the church around the world?’

We also had to pivot multiple times along the way, and I’m always reminded of what Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote in his classic work on Christian discipleship, Life Together:  “We must be ready to allow ourselves to be interrupted by God.”

Cover of the September/October 2024 Issue

Our September/October issue explores themes in spiritual formation and uncovers what’s really discipling us. Bonnie Kristian argues that the biblical vision for the institutions that form us is renewal, not replacement—even when they fail us. Mike Cosper examines what fuels political fervor around Donald Trump and assesses the ways people have understood and misunderstood the movement. Harvest Prude reports on how partisan distrust has turned the electoral process into a minefield and how those on the frontlines—election officials and volunteers—are motivated by their faith as they work. Read about Christian renewal in intellectual spaces and the “yearners”—those who find themselves in the borderlands between faith and disbelief. And find out how God is moving among his kingdom in Europe, as well as what our advice columnists say about budget-conscious fellowship meals, a kid in Sunday school who hits, and a dating app dilemma.
