Consistency, Balance, Leadership

Don’t overlook the quiet people when training new leaders.

Leadership Journal January 16, 2013

Some leaders are easy to identify. They seek me out. But others are more reticent. They usually process things internally, working through how God might use them in the future. I make it a point to identify these people and initiate the conversation.

There are three things that I look for in such people: (1) Consistency. Are they faithful and optimistic as they walk, work, and worship God with others? (2) Balance. Do they avoid extremes and bring people together by communicating truth with grace, mercy, and love? (3) Leadership. Do others speak well of them and affirm their ability to lead?

If so, I ask them to assume greater responsibilities within the body. Then I establish them in the ministry God has laid upon their hearts and for which their gifting can be affirmed. I then engage them with the leadership of the church where they can be equipped for additional responsibilities.
