Murder Yesterday opens with a melancholy piano line and the whispering lyric, “I won’t say that I’m hopeless, but the best I can be is sometimes not enough.” The singer’s solemn disposition lingers throughout the album, occasionally contrasting against choruses about Christ’s unconditional love. But even during emotional bursts of rhythm, the songs come across more heartbreaking than hopeful. Murder Yesterday is not uplifting, but a sobering journey into the contemplative mind of an artist trying to mature and become a man of deeper convictions.
