Mike Roe of the 77s and Derri Daugherty of the Choir join to form Kerosene Halo, trading harmonies and gentle acoustic strumming here as though they were playing in your living room. Nine cover tunes by the likes of Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Richard Thompson, and others are squarely in the realm of the sometimes-country strains of the duo’s “other band,” The Lost Dogs, than anything resembling alt rock. Greg Kellogg’s pedal-steel licks breathe transcendence into the tracks. Poetic takes on Christian faith color most of the selections, with Larry Norman’s classic “The Outlaw” (about Christ’s earthly ministry) carrying the most biblical weight. Soothing and evocative stuff—perfect for an afternoon curled up on the porch swing.
