Even worship music can fall prey to “trying too hard.” Shust’s songs are simple to a flaw, with his lyrics almost exclusively Christianese. Nearly every line is plucked straight from a Bible verse. The album opens with, “You are the Christ (Matt 16:16), Anointed One (Acts 4:27), Light of the world (John 8:12), God’s only Son (John 3:16),” and this trend continues all the way to the last track: “God so loved the world, That He gave His one and only Son, That anybody who believes in Him will have, Everlasting life.” Good words in the context of Scripture reading, but they just feel unoriginal here.
