Joaquin Phoenix—you know, the guy who dated his computer in Her—is a strong front-runner to land the lead in Marvel’s latest film Doctor Strange. (It’s not official, but IndieWire said Phoenix was seen buying copies of the comic books and everything.) Horror film director (and Christian) Scott Derrickson is directing the film; read our interview with him here.
In case you think the movie industry is only concerned with box office profits, be encouraged by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and their Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. On Tuesday they announced that this year’s award will go to actor/producer/singer/activist Harry Belafonte. Find out more about the events that led him to this accomplishment here.
The Maze Runner, based on the popular YA book, is expected to make $30 million at its box office opening on September 19—an impressive number credited to the presence of both male and female fans not often found at YA novel adaptions. The studio has begun preparing a script for the second book in the series, The Scorch Trials, and several other YA novels, but it all depends on how much mullah rolls in for The Maze Runner.
