Not “Just” Another Assignment

It’s one of life’s more interesting topics. But bringing five scholars to Chicago to talk about sex for two days was, to say the least, an interesting assignment.

But the five invited to the CT Institute forum on human sexuality were equal to the challenge.

Judy Balswick and Kaye Cooke enlivened our discussions throughout, drawing deeply from their experiences as professional counselors. (In essence, it was “just another day or two at the office.”) Ethicist Stan Grenz, a frequent CT contributor, somehow managed to spare two days between a book project and a sabbatical to lend his on-target social commentary.

William Stafford took advantage of the forum to chide the moderator (“little brother” Tim) for his article on intimacy in January’s CT (harmless sibling rivalry, actually). And institute dean Kenneth Kantzer acted the sage once again, offering his theological understanding as the underpinning to all that was discussed and decided upon.

CT senior writer Tim Stafford deftly drew comments out of each participant, dutifully typing them into his lap-top computer. These electronic notes, in turn (and along with two days’ worth of transcripts), provided the superstructure for the special article beginning on Page 23.
