From the Berlin Wall to Rock and Roll

Our cluster of articles on Eastern Europe (beginning on p. 15) is an initial stab at making some sense out of last fall’s momentous happenings. Because the political volte-face has tremendous implications for the Eastern European church, these articles certainly won’t be our last on the subject.

This particular package was in many ways triggered by a phone call we received from the vice-chairman of our CTi board, Clayton Bell. Some members of the church Clayton pastors, Highland Park Presbyterian Church of Dallas, decided to send their pastor for a firsthand look at the revolution taking place.

“Is there anything I can do to help you while I’m there?” Clayton asked. We eagerly enlisted him as our eyes and ears. He traveled to many cities in East Germany and interviewed pastors and church leaders. Clayton’s report begins on page 15.

From the world-shaking events of Eastern Europe to plain old rock and roll: Last issue we ran a classified advertisement for a Christian bulletin-board service, the Christian Connection Project. Dial this number, the ad advised, and you can record your testimony, listen to others testify, or talk on an open line to other Christians. Unfortunately, due to a telephone company mix-up, the number that readers were asked to call linked them with a recorded promotion for the Grateful Dead rock band’s latest national tour.

If you’re not a Deadhead and made the call, we join the Christian Connection Project in apologizing on behalf of the phone company. While our advertising department has done a great job finding new advertisers, they have not gone after over-the-hill rock musicians. Yet.
