Problems of Joint Action Are Detailed

A group of 36 Christian scholars and leaders believe evangelicals are in danger of overlooking theological differences when working together with their Roman Catholic counterparts.

“Resolutions for Roman Catholic and Evangelical Dialogue,” drafted by Michael Horton with revisions by J. L Packer, was issued in response to the controversial document “Evangelicals and Catholics Together: The Christian Mission in the Third Millennium” (CT, May 16, 1994, p. 52).

The seven-point resolution calls for an “irenic debate” on the issues of ecumenical cooperation. It also details points of disagreement with Catholic teaching, including good works, papal infallibility, and the doctrine of justification.

The resolution says Catholics and evangelicals should join “minds, hearts, and hands” around Christian values. Yet, it would be incorrect to conclude Catholics and evangelicals are “fulfilling a common ecclesial mission,” even though they may act jointly on common concerns.
