Regent Names New President

An army general who supervised the withdrawal of American tactical nuclear weapons in Europe will become Regent University’s new president next month.

Retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Paul Cerjan, 59, is a West Point graduate, a Vietnam veteran, and former president of both the Army War College and National Defense University, where he managed 500 faculty and staff and oversaw a $24.5 million budget. Cerjan is also a self-described “interdenominational” person.

He replaces 49-year-old Terry Lindvall, who has been appointed chair of visual communication at Regent after four years as president.

The Virginia Beach school continues its ambitious plans for expansion, including building a new school of communications, fine arts building, and a chapel. The school’s endowment fund has been boosted to $276.5 million by the sale of the Family Channel in June (CT, July 14, 1997, p. 60), making Regent one of the 100 richest universities in the country.

Founder Pat Robertson says, “It is my dream that under Cerjan’s leadership Regent University will become a major international center of learning with an extended campus of 250,000 students.”
