Rich Mullins Killed in Crash

Contemporary Christian singer Rich Mullins, 41, was killed in a traffic accident September 19 near Lostant, Illinois, en route to a benefit concert in Wichita, Kansas, where he lived.

His Jeep went out of control on Interstate 39, and he was thrown out of the vehicle onto the pavement, then run over by a tractor-trailer truck. Mullins, whose “Awesome God” became an instant praise and worship standard in 1988, had recorded nine albums in the past 11 years.

Mullins, a native of Richmond, Indiana, wrote more than 90 songs, including number-one Christian chart hits such as “Hold Me Jesus,” “My One Thing,” and “While the Nations Rage.” He also composed “Sing Your Praise to the Lord,” recorded by Amy Grant.

In the past nine years, Mullins worked with Compassion International, concentrating in the last three years on teaching music to Native American students on a Navajo reservation.
