In Brief: October 05, 1998

  • The Cambodian government has granted the first license to a Christian radio station in the country, which is 95 percent Buddhist. Far East Broadcasting Company will begin local programs at Christmas.
  • More than 8,000 people in Burundi converted to Christianity during a five-day crusade in the capital city of Bujumbura, conducted by San Antonio evangelist Sammy Tippit. In all, 95,000 people attended the meetings, which concluded August 2. It marked the first crusade in the city in a decade.
  • Lars Dunberg has resigned as international president of International Bible Society (IBS). Dunberg had earlier been international president of Living Bibles International, which merged with IBS in 1992.
  • Sidney DeWaal, president of Jerusalem University College, has been elected chancellor of the International Council for Higher Education, a new Zurich-based organization geared to “pursuing excellence in academic programs and promoting sustainable models of higher education, particularly in countries where educational opportunities are restricted or are in need of enhancement.” Seventeen delegates from theological institutions around the world held an inaugural meeting in Switzerland.
