North AmericaTed Yamamori, president of Food for the Hungry International and Food for the Hungry Inc. since 1984, has announced plans to retire. Successors for both organizations are expected to be in place by June 2001.Andrew K. Benton, 47, will become the seventh president of Pepperdine University July 1, 2000. The Churches of Christ school is located in Malibu, California.David Dahlin has been named chief operating officer of Compassion International in Colorado Springs. He previously worked as director of the organization’s president’s office.George Sweeting has retired as chancellor of Moody Bible Institute after 12 years in the role. He will continue with the school as chancellor emeritus.Choral conductor and actor Jester Hairston died January 18 in Los Angeles at age 98. The grandson of a slave, Hairston composed or arranged more than 300 spirituals during his career, including “Amen,” “Hold On,” and “Elijah Rock.”James G. Erickson is the new president of Christian Service Brigade in Wheaton, Illinois.
