Cuba No Es Libre

“Methodist church members visit Cuba without a permit and face fines up to $7,500 each”

In 1999, six members of Milwaukee’s Central United Methodist Church went to visit their sister church in Havana, Cuba. But they didn’t obtain a permit to do so, and now they face fines up to $7,500 each. “It wasn’t [the government’s] business why we were going, and it would contaminate the church to restrict our reasons to what would get us a license,” church member and attorney Sandra Edhlund told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. The Methodists are fighting the fines on religious freedom grounds (among others), and say they’ll keep visiting Cuba.
