Quotation Marks

Recent quotes on Christian rock in school, family films, preemies, and Bushspeak.

“I think there is a place for Christian bands, and schools aren’t where they belong. … I’m amazed they even considered it.”

Donna Chiarelott, whose son attends Rossford (Ohio) High School. The school canceled the appearance of the Christian band Pawn at an antidrug rally during class hours after the school district’s law firm said their participation “wasn’t appropriate.”

“If any of these religious groups get behind it, we have a much better chance.”

Matthew Hiltzik, executive producer of the documentary Paper Clips. The New York Times notes that major movie companies are starting to focus print ad campaigns “almost entirely on quotes from Christian- and family-oriented media.” An ad for the widely panned Christmas with the Kranks, for example, was loaded with positive blurbs from Christian critics.

“It’s how long you’ve been in the oven that’s important, not how small you are.”

Jonathan Muraskas, a Loyola University neonatologist, commenting on Rumaisa Rahman, a Chicago-area preemie delivered after 26 weeks of gestation—three weeks longer than the minimum necessary to survive—on September 19. Rahman weighed 8.6 ounces at birth and was the size of a cell phone.

“It’s not a code word when I put [in] a reference to T.S. Eliot’s ‘Four Quartets’ … it’s a literary reference. Just because some people don’t get it doesn’t mean it’s a plot or a secret.”

Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson, denying that the President used religious “code words” to win evangelicals in the 2004 election.
