TWIST AGAIN

TWIST AGAIN

Secretly Canadian

June 21, 2011

Top tracks: “Mary Don’t You Weep,” “One Hand Loves the Other,” “Ever with Us”

The last time we heard from Bodies of Water, the husband-and-wife team of David and Meredith Metcalf were writing eschatological prog-rock epics. Here, the band retains some horns and strings, but if A Certain Feeling was the wild child, Twist Again is the more subdued older brother. Nestling restrained tracks next to songs with ’60s psychedelia and near-disco beats gives the album a diverse palette that’s welcome, if a bit scattershot. The Metcalfs also haven’t completely given up on end-times themes, singing, “Mary, don’t you weep, oh Martha don’t you moan … At the end of time, when your family’s dead / You will have the one you love instead.”
