Top tracks: “Father of Lights,” “Nothing But the Blood,” “He Is Faithful”

One of worship music’s most popular movements packs two discs (for the price of one) with electrifying corporate worship recorded earlier this year at Chicago’s Allstate Arena. Though the Jesus Culture band can’t be blamed for worship music’s switch from reverent to rock, amps of staggering sound leave little room for thoughtful reflection or deliberate contemplation—spiritual essentials in compelling the church forward. And though the heart is genuine and the live production stellar, the lyrics lack theological meat. Ironically, the most vibrant track is an old liturgical hymn (“Nothing but the Blood”), confirmed by the audible swell of crowd participation.
