When Sean Finnegan decided to make a documentary on the problem of porn, he didn’t want mere facts and figures interwoven with expert sound bites. The best way to tell this story was to, well, tell a story—and for Out of the Darkness (Anteroom Pictures), now on DVD, he found a powerful one in former porn actress Shelley Lubben, who now runs a ministry helping others escape the sex industry and find hope and healing in Christ.
The film focuses on four subjects: Lubben; recovered sex addict Mark Houck; family therapist Richard Fitzgibbons; and sexual revolution historian Judith Reisman. All are more than mere talking heads; they all have stories about how porn and attitudes about sex have affected their lives. But Lubben’s is the most riveting: Neglected by her parents and sexually molested at 9 years old, she sought love in all the wrong places—namely prostitution and porn. When a man fell for her, and not merely her body, she eventually escaped what she calls a “cult” and found true love, in marriage and in faith. While made from a Christian perspective, the film is not preachy, but lets the stories speak for themselves.
