Enough

A brief look.

Pastor Will Davis Jr. wants American evangelicals to quit chasing the American Dream—to scale back our lust for consumer goods and reject the false allure of secure prosperity. Who could disagree? But Davis’s prophetic voice also utters some dubious assurances. Is it really true that “you’ll be happier” without the burdens (and blessings) of wealth? Does the sacrifice of luxury really promise more time, peace, contentment, simplicity, and joy? Better relationships and greater intimacy with God? Fewer financial frustrations? Surely—eventually—all these things will be added unto those who seek the kingdom first. Just don’t expect them prematurely.—Matt Reynolds
