Review: Community Is Messy

A brief look.

Heather Zempel uses her knowledge of environmental engineering to plan small-group environments that foster change and transformation. She admits those environments are messy, but it’s a mess that produces radical change in people’s lives. She encourages readers to see discipleship as a journey of becoming—more like a laboratory than a classroom, with experiments, spills, and explosions. Zempel openly shares her experiences—both good and bad—as discipleship pastor at National Community Church in Washington, D.C., and invites small-group leaders to embrace the mess of community life.
