Hope after Helene

When Hannah King and her neighbors in Canton, North Carolina, heard that Hurricane Helene was coming their direction, they prepared immediately. Even still, when the floodwaters rose, so did their dismay.

King, a minister, wanted to help however she could, but cellular and internet outages hampered communication. She and her husband began walking through town, striking up conversations, praying with people, and collaborating to help others.

“Then, my husband started making his way around the county to coordinate broader efforts. I was at home with three small children and no way to hear or share news or participate in citywide projects,” writes King at CT. “My inability to contribute was maddening. I was wracked with a strange combination of frantically wanting to help and being extremely limited in what I could do.”

In “Facing My Limits in a Flood Zone,” King reflects on how Helene reminded her of God’s strength in our weakness. She couldn’t help in all the ways she wanted to, but she could do the next right thing.

As crises strike in our communities, or as we struggle personally, may we remember that we are loved by a God whose resources are infinite. Our help, most assuredly, comes from him.

in the magazine

Our September/October issue explores themes in spiritual formation and uncovers what’s really discipling us. Bonnie Kristian argues that the biblical vision for the institutions that form us is renewal, not replacement—even when they fail us. Mike Cosper examines what fuels political fervor around Donald Trump and assesses the ways people have understood and misunderstood the movement. Harvest Prude reports on how partisan distrust has turned the electoral process into a minefield and how those on the frontlines—election officials and volunteers—are motivated by their faith as they work. Read about Christian renewal in intellectual spaces and the “yearners”—those who find themselves in the borderlands between faith and disbelief. And find out how God is moving among his kingdom in Europe, as well as what our advice columnists say about budget-conscious fellowship meals, a kid in Sunday school who hits, and a dating app dilemma.
