Honoring Holy Tuesday

How can I ever get over Jesus?

So asks Evan Welcher in a CT devotional reflecting on Holy Tuesday. Welcher explores the miracle of Jesus’ death and resurrection. As he journeys through Scripture and looks at who Jesus is in the biblical text, Welcher finds a truth that he has seen borne out in his own life as well: Death does not deter the glory of God.

“How can there be joy from all this death?” asks Welcher. “A kernel of wheat must fall to the earth and die if there is to be a harvest. You, Lord, are a grain of wheat crushed to become the bread of life, and we are partakers of the bread of heaven, partakers who shall hunger no more (John 6:35).”

As we honor the ultimate sacrifice—and most joyous of miracles— this week, may we not gloss over the reality of Jesus’ death. And may our grief and gratitude over the perfect one bearing our sins make our celebration of the resurrection even sweeter.
