Creation as Science: A Testable Model Approach
to End the Creation/Evolution Wars

Hugh Ross
NavPress
291 pages, $21.99

Few individuals are better qualified than Hugh Ross—minister with a Ph.D. in astronomy—to apply a balm of common sense to the increasingly heated debate over creation and evolution.

His newest book begins with a much-needed reminder that "God has revealed himself to humanity in two books, the written record [the Bible] and the record of nature." In other words, we should never be forced to reject science in order to embrace the Bible, or vice versa.

Ross is also adept at reclaiming the theological implications of accepted scientific theories, such as the Big Bang. In addition, he chides certain Christians who engage in evolution-bashing without offering "a definitive explanation or evidential defense of their own beliefs about life's origin and history."

So does this book fulfill its promise to "end the creation/evolution wars"? Not really.

Readers on both sides of the line will argue with Ross's creation model. And those looking for specific, scientific experiments to support his theory (as I was) will be disappointed.

Still, Creation as Science opens the door for meaningful dialogue between proponents of creationism, evolution, and Intelligent Design.

And that is definitely a step in the right direction.

The theorology of creation is a controversial subject that divides the church, and makes good money for some who write about it. God never told us the details - and - if he wanted us to know he would have been as explicit about that subject as He is about the subject of salvation. God's point of view is clear. He reveals himself to us in His creation - not in how he did it. How God created this universe is a matter of faith in God and His son Jesus Christ. Not in the science - theories or theorolgies of creation. I believe that if the Church wer to redirect the time, dollars, and energy it expends on promoting "Creationist Theorologies" - to revealing the God of creation to the unsaved we would see great gains in the growth of His Kingdom.

I too was disappointed in this review. Of course the bible writings can be interpreted to reflect scientific descriptions - that is their function -not literality. We have knowledge not available to our forebears so obviously they were not able to be specific and speak in picture language - midrash - which has many layers to be stripped off according to the enlightenment of the reader/interpreter. The glory of God is creation fully alive - apologies to Ausgustine. I think humankind wastes a lot of time on this debate - time better used in loving neighbours - caring for 'widows and orphans' ( that is the most needy) in our local an global society. In fact I suspect the pursuit of argument is much easier than getting your hands dirty hence its attractiveness.

The author's conclusion regarding Hugh Ross's Creation vs Science is almost without a shadow of doubt, sadly to say, likely to have little effect on the two schools of thought. I say sadly because I believe the Bible to unquestionably to be a miracle book (obviously supernatural) when one considers it's authorship, (dozens of writers over a time span of centuries) the the accurate continuity from cover to cover of it's essential concepts and contents, prophecies of future events and explanation of everything. I believe it is the only reference text, on the subject, at our disposal to be reliable. Our universe, by the same token has been and is being scrutinized to greater depths and with greater accuracy than ever before. Accurate and objective findings of science are currently being provided in leaps and bounds for correlation with scripture. An honest comparison of the Bible & Creation will eventually show, I am convinced, no contradictions.
