Deaths, promotions, and other items from the religion world.

Appointed Bill Armstrong, as president of Colorado Christian University on August 15. Armstrong, who represented Colorado in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate for 18 years, replaced Larry Donnithorne.

Defeated Ralph Reed, in Georgia’s Republican primary for lieutenant governor on July 18. The former Christian Coalition leader’s connections to the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal hampered his first bid for public office.

Named Daniel Bourdanné, as the next general secretary for the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students. Bourdanné, who currently serves as the IFES regional secretary for francophone Africa, will replace Lindsay Brown in the summer of 2007.

Promoted Henry Smith, as the eighth president of Indiana Wesleyan University on June 1. Smith, the school’s former executive vice president, replaces Jim Barnes, who is becoming the university’s first chancellor after his 19-year tenure as president.

Sentenced Zhang Rongliang, a leader in the Chinese house-church movement, to seven and a half years in prison for “attaining a passport by cheating” and “illegal border crossing.” Henan police arrested Zhang without charges in December 2004, according to Compass Direct. Zhang has been jailed five other times in connection with his church leadership.
