From Jerusalem to Timbuktu: A World Tour of the Spread of Christianity

Brian C. Stiller (InterVarsity Press)

What explains the astonishing growth of Christianity in Asia, Africa, and Latin America over the past century? Brian Stiller, global ambassador for the World Evangelical Alliance and general editor of Evangelicals Around the World: A Global Handbook for the 21st Century, draws on his extensive travels throughout these regions and relationships with church leaders around the globe to suggest five main “drivers”: a vibrant appreciation for the work of the Holy Spirit, a profusion of new Bible translations in native languages, the development of indigenous leadership and ministry models, a renewed attention to public-square engagement, and a growing conviction that the church should care for the whole person, body and soul.

Your God Is Too Glorious: Finding God in the Most Unexpected Places

Chad Bird(Baker)

In 1 Thessalonians 4:11, Paul writes, “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life.” For Chad Bird, a Lutheran writer and speaker, “This is arguably one of the most un-American verses in the Bible. Those words have become almost a mantra for me. I must say them over and over to silence the lifelong indoctrination I have received from a culture that idolizes those who do big things and urges us all to do likewise.” Your God Is Too Glorious challenges believers to find God at work in the faces and places that are all but invisible to the wider world.

Wurmbrand: Tortured for Christ—The Complete Story

The Voice of the Martyrs(David C. Cook)

Twentieth-century Communism insisted on atheism as its official creed, and its functionaries had little tolerance for anyone courageous enough to profess a higher authority than the state. In Romania shortly after World War II, the authorities undertook a vicious campaign of persecution against pastor Richard Wurmbrand, who had started leading illegal worship services in secret. Imprisoned for 14 years, he endured various forms of torture while his wife, Sabina, spent three excruciating years at a labor camp. The Wurmbrands went on to found The Voice of the Martyrs, which tells their story in this volume: a composite of books by Richard (Tortured for Christ andIn God’s Underground) and Sabina (The Pastor’s Wife).

This issue's cover story explores the role of Christians in America's boutique but burgeoning commercial surrogacy industry-as carriers, as customers, and as critics. Assisted reproduction is a complicated and controversial field for pro-life believers to navigate. Some women who carry babies for other couples view it as a calling. Other Christians believe the practice violates the sanctity of life and marriage. It is mostly, however, an under-discussed subject that has evolved faster than Protestant thinking on it.
