Top tracks: “You Set the Rhythm,” “Listen to the Lord,” “That’s Exactly (How I Like It)”

Much of what made Newworldson a media sensation with its 2008 debut Salvation Station was the band’s ability to excellently integrate jazz, blues, gospel and pop all within a jam-heavy, modern rock framework. Though those trends continue to a certain extent on this self-titled follow-up, one can’t help but notice that the original magic and delightfully complex musical mayhem seems dialed down a notch. While the group has every right to toss in a few mid-tempo pop tunes, they’re far less interesting when compared to the otherwise hearty assortment of rootsy barnburners.
