Crave

February 28, 2012

Top tracks: “Light It Up,” “The Proof of Your Love,” “People Change”

Crave is full of hopeful anthems that ratify For King and Country’s earnest moniker. Electric guitars, swelling orchestration, and brothers Luke and Joel Smallbone’s harmonic vocals (big sister is Rebecca St. James) suggest Kings of Leon with a thick coat of varnish. More grit would have served the project well. Most tracks start with some creative promise, only to devolve into generic riffs. And it’s hard to believe Jesus would ever whisper, “It’s a fine, fine life / Every day I find, it’s a fine, fine life,” especially if he was stranded with a flat tire, as one song imagines.
