Jews for Jesus Fights Cult Label

Moishe Rosen, executive director of Jews for Jesus, says the organization has received almost 2,000 letters, many from regular donors, asking to be removed from its mailing list in the wake of a June article in Modern Maturity magazine.

The ten-page cover story, “Let Us Prey,” named Jews for Jesus in a list of cults—including Hare Krishnas, transcendental meditators, and Branch Davidians—that allegedly swindle seniors. Modern Maturity said, “Jews for Jesus may not meet all definitions of a cult, but its recruiting practices are indicative of tactics cults, or cult-like organizations, use.” Rosen, who rejects the allegation that the San Francisco-based mainstream evangelical group uses cult-like tactics, says Modern Maturity would not respond to phone calls and faxes requesting a correction. Jews for Jesus staged a July 20 protest at Modern Maturity’s offices in Washington, D.C.
