First Woman, Layperson Elected Chair

The World Methodist Council elected its first woman and layperson as chair at its August meeting in Rio de Janeiro.

Frances M. Aguire of New Buffalo, Michigan, is a United Methodist and a retired registered nurse. She served as president of the World Methodist Council’s American section from 1986 to 1991.

Aguire says she is the product of summer camp meetings, having been baptized when she answered an altar call as a young girl.

The World Methodist Council is an international association of Methodist, Wesleyan, and other related churches. Although the Lake Junaluska, North Carolina, organization exercises no legislative power over separate denominations, it develops goals and programs agreed upon by member churches.
