Becoming a Christian

Twelve conversations with people who came to Christ.

This book tells how a Mormon, a Jew, a Hindu, an atheist, a Jehovah’s Witness, an agnostic, a witch, a Buddhist, a Unitarian, a New Ager, a Muslim, and a Satanist came to traditional faith in Christ. Like Lee Strobel’s The Case for a Creator and other apologetic works, Rainer uses an interview format, showing how the intellect is subordinate to the will on the road to salvation.

The Unexpected Journey:Conversations withPeople WhoTurned fromOther Beliefs to Jesusby Thom S. RainerZondervan208 pp.; $16.99

A few quibbles: Rainer summarily writes off reincarnation as “a total lie” and other religions as following “false gods”—as if this is all that needs to be said. In addition, Rainer appears stingy and inconsistent with resources.

Fortunately, The Unexpected Journey is less about academics and more about the simple display of God’s grace in the lives of 12 souls who radiate the joy of their rescue.
