Deaths, promotions, and other items from the religion world.

Died John A. Huffman Sr., the last living member of the National Association of Evangelicals’ founders committee, on May 22 in Carol Stream, Illinois. Huffman, founding editor of United Evangelical Action magazine, was 92.

Died Marti Lou Smedley Hefley, 70, on May 30 in Hannibal, Missouri, after a long illness. Hefley wrote or co-authored with her husband many books, including By Their Blood: Christian Martyrs of the Twentieth Century, which won the Gold Medallion Award in 1980. Her husband, James Hefley, died on March 20.

Hired Wayne Pederson, as station manager of wmbi, the flagship station of the Moody Broadcasting Network. In 2002, Pederson was forced to resign as president of National Religious Broadcasters in a dispute over politics. Most recently, Pederson was president of Mission America and special assistant to the president of Bethel Seminary.

Died Charlie Shedd, author of Letters to Karen, Letters to Philip, Brush of an Angel’s Wing, and other works, on May 24 at the age of 88.

Resigning Mark Sturge, after eight years as general secretary of the African and Caribbean Evangelical Alliance, which represents black-majority churches in the United Kingdom. A successor is being sought.

Martyred Pakistani Christian Javed Anjum, 19, on May 2 in Faisalabad, according to Christian Solidarity Worldwide. Anjum was tortured to death over five days by Muslim extremists for refusing to convert to Islam.

Appointed Wheaton College historian Mark Noll, to the Cary and Ann Maguire Chair in American History and Ethics at the John W. Kluge Center of the Library of Congress. Noll, the third person so honored, starts in September.
