In his Easter message in The Pennsylvania Episcopalian, Bishop Charles Bennison Jr. wrote that Jesus “acknowledges his own sin. He knows himself to be forgiven.” In a later response to Episcopalians who countered that Jesus “committed no sin” (Heb. 4:15, 1 Pet. 2:22), he said he didn’t mean to contradict “the church’s scriptures, tradition and doctrine.” Still, he didn’t say Jesus was sinless. It’s not the only statement Bennison has “clarified” lately. “Just because there are millions of conservative Christians who rally around issues like homosexuality, that doesn’t mean they’re right,” he told National Public Radio in January. “Adolf Hitler had many followers as well.” He later said he was “only trying to distinguish between growth and truth.”
