British Columbia’s Greg Sczebel has mastered the art of catchy piano pop—with splashes of rock, jazz, and even disco—on this, his second album. A two-time winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, Sczebel’s lyrics of wit and weight cover topics from complacency to revival, from materialism to heaven. On “Canceling the Noise” he sings, “Building beliefs like pyramids / With a chart and graph and linear paths / That intellect and logic would approve / But what if God cannot be summarized / Or divvied down to science and then pocket sized?”
