Style: Minimalist, avant-garde folk; compare to Phillip Glass, Taylor Deupree, Great Lake Swimmers
Top tracks: “Leaving, Believing,” “O Frailty”
Minimalist sound manipulator Ethan Rose collaborates with Laura Gibson’s folk/jazz vocals to create Bridge Carols, a compilation of Gibson’s unused lyrical scraps recorded in basement, forest, and field, then altered and rearranged by Rose to create vast soundscapes, at once irresistibly reverent and avant-garde. Although the poetic imagery is seemingly random, in the album’s rebirth of sound, listeners are reborn into wonder, remembering that humans bear the image of God, that wordless worship does indeed exist, and that the act of creation can in itself be an act of worship.
